ATTENTION
GoodHire recently began working with a new partner to provide motor vehicle record (MVR) searches for our background checks. With this new partnership, we are now able to deliver MVR results even faster than before!
Nevertheless, the increase in speed has come with a temporary loss of information pertaining to medical certifications linked to Commercial Driver Licenses (CDLs), which we know is required for background checks that abide by the Department of Transportation (DOT) standards.
We are actively working with our new partner to re-add this information into MVR results on a state-by-state basis. By early August, medical certifications for GA, IA, KY, MD, MI, OR, PA, VA, WI will be available and the remaining states will be available again until Q4 of this year. But the following states will not be possible to include medical certificates: CO, CT, HI, KS, MO, NE, OK, SD, UT, WV, WY.
We understand if this change creates challenges for your organization and welcome your feedback as we work diligently to expand our capabilities.
Overview
The Motor Vehicle Records Check (MVR) searches a given state’s DMV to confirm if a driver’s license is valid, as well as returning any driving-related violations and accidents. It will show the type of license the candidate has (e.g. Class C) and any endorsements, as well as any accidents that the candidate was involved in, even if the candidate was not at fault.
The Motor Vehicle Records Check typically returns results that span anywhere from 3 to 10 years, depending on the state being searched. Please refer to our MVR Search Coverage document for more information.
Ordering
MVRs can be purchased as an add-on to any of GoodHire’s background check packages. Employers can add up to 5 MVRs to any background report. Each MVR will check a single driver’s license and return associated information and records.
Reviewing Results
Regardless of the outcome, all MVR checks will show:
- Basic information on the requested driver’s license
- Endorsements
- Restrictions
- License Notes
- HIstorical License Records and their associated endorsements and restrictions

The MVR Check returns an alert when the driver’s license is invalid, suspended, or if any driving violations are found. The information include consists of:
Accidents, including the number of vehicles, if the candidate was at fault, and if there were any injuries or fatalities.
Violations and Suspensions
Turnaround Time & Additional Fees
Turnaround time depends on the state being searched. Results will typically be returned between 1 to 3 business days.
Each state charges a fee for access to their DMV records. For state specific fees and turnaround times, please refer to our MVR Search Coverage document.
Notes
MVRs include records from reciprocal states. Reciprocal states are states which have entered agreements to share information with each other regarding driving violations. It is therefore possible that an MVR might return records from a different state than the one that was searched.
For searches in Washington, New Hampshire, or Pennsylvania, the employer and the candidate will need to sign an additional consent form. For searches in Utah, the employer will need to register with the UT DMV and get an organization ID.
For searches in Hawaii the result can return as Alert when no information from license is returned by Hawaii state.
