Overview
DOT Drug Test requirements are regulated by the Federal Government. They have strict guidelines which are described in The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) rule, 49 CFR Part 40. Some differences from regular drug tests include:
- HHS certified lab testing only
- Urine specimen only
- No rapid, instant, or point of contact testing permitted
Contact GoodHire Sales or your Customer Success team member to add a DOT Drug Screening to your background check package.
Ordering a DOT Drug Test
When ordering a DOT Drug Test the employer or candidate will have to provide the following information for the drug test candidate:
- Day and Evening Phone Numbers
- Testing Authority
- CDL State
- CDL Number
Note: GoodHire DOT Drug Screenings can only be ordered for candidates who are regulated by one of the following Authorities:
- Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)
- Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
- Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
- Federal Transit Administration (FTA)
- Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)
- United States Coast Guard (USCG)
If you have candidates and employees which you’d like to test with the same rigor as the DOT Drug Test, ask our sales team about the 5 Panel (LAL), also known as a DOT Look-A-Like drug test. It tests for the same drugs and levels and goes through the same process and restrictions as the DOT Drug Test, but for non-regulated positions.
Results
Every test result is interpreted and confirmed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO).
The cutoff levels for initial and confirmatory tests are shown below. Drug testing cut-off levels are usually expressed in units of measure ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter). A nanogram is one billionth (1/1,000,000,000) of a gram.
